Is this a bill? What to do if you receive an Explanation of Benefits (EOB)

The most important thing to remember is that an EOB is not a bill.

An EOB is an Explanation of Benefits document. You will typically receive this document after you are treated by a provider, as a way to let you know that a claim has been processed with your insurance provider. It serves as a summary of your claims and will let you know whether or not the claim was approved and for how much. The EOB provides important information regarding the treatment you received, including the service performed, dates of service, procedure code(s), amount claimed, policy deductible, patient balance, etc. However, you do not need to pay the patient balance until you receive a bill. If you have questions about an EOB you receive, contact your benefit administrators for assistance.
