5 Ways to Find Work-Life Balance for the Holidays
1. Plan ahead
If you know you have an upcoming trip or a deadline at work, plan ahead. Schedule a time to organize everything that needs to get done so that you don’t end up needing to procrastinate. the night before. Writing everything down will help your brain organize what needs to be done and help you stay focused on the goal: that fun vacation or important work deadline.
2. Make an effort to turn off your computer at a certain time
We would like to bet that anyone could close their office and work for weeks at a time because there wouldn’t be any interruptions from client calls or emails, no manager requesting anything, and there would actually be time to focus on the activities that have been sitting on the backburner. Factor in most people working from home nowadays, and it adds to the workaholic culture we seem to be living in. But when your family is watching a Netflix holiday movie at 9pm drinking hot cocoa by the tree? Go join them. Make a point to turn off your computer at a certain time of day, regardless of what else is on your plate. Make sure your priorities are taken care of throughout the day so that at the time you choose, you can shut your laptop.
3. Say “no”
Don’t try to satisfy everyone. In doing so, you will end up putting yourself last. If you even have the slightest bit of hesitation to say yes to something, whether that is because of your busy schedule or simply not wanting to participate in an activity, just say no!
4. Add another workout
What? To my already crazy schedule? Yes! Work is busy, life is busy, holidays are fun, but nothing gives more of an energy boost than adding in another workout to heighten that adrenaline. Not to mention, it will actually completely clear your mind from the craziness of work and holidays.
5. Bring holiday cheer to the office
Since it’s inevitable that you will need to work during the holidays, bring the holiday cheer to the office! Decorate your area with fun lights, a nice-smelling candle, put up a few snowflakes. Listen to christmas music, bring in your favorite holiday drink (think: fun lattes and hot chocolate) and boost the holiday spirit for everyone in the office!
